Documenting autograph provenance and authenticity records

Provenance is the documented history of an item. It is different from independent authentication: good records help explain where an autograph came from, but they do not prove that a signature is genuine.

1

Record how you acquired it

Include event or seller details, date obtained, any previous-owner information you can support, and the item type.

2

Keep the source documents

Store certificate references and images, purchase receipts, photos from in-person signings, and any written documentation.

3

Separate facts from estimates

Record price paid, estimated value and formal appraisals separately. Do not confuse asking prices with verified sold prices.

4

Share selectively

Only publicly reveal details you are comfortable sharing. Keep receipts, purchase data and private notes in their protected record fields.
